Earth Hour 2013 is being held on March 23, and we have started to focus our attention on ways to make LedgersOnline a more efficient and green business. As you probably know, Earth Hour is one of the largest mass participation events in the world, bringing millions of people together for one hour in order to show concern for the environment.
Since this event is being held within the next two weeks, we decided to come up with ways to create a more efficient and green business environment. This not only leads to a more sustainable earth, but also saves your business money on utility bills. Take a look below for four ways to increase your business’s efficiency.
Changing from incandescent light bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs is a great way to reduce costs, while also taking your business green. CFL’s use 75% less energy when compared to incandescents, and allow for instant cost savings through your electric bill. While the initial cost is more expensive, these bulbs also last on average 10 times longer than incandescents.
Another strategy to reduce the cost of your electric bill is to turn lights off when not in use. While this is a relatively simple strategy, it is often overlooked in the business environment, and leads to shorter energy costs, as well as longer lasting lights.
Powering down your computers and printers during non-office hours is also an effective strategy that reduces your costs and promotes a green business environment. Ask your employees to change their power settings and allow for their computers to sleep when inactive for over 30 minutes. Printers and scanners should also be shut down at the end of the day to reduce energy loss. This helps to prevent stress on the machine, prolonging its lifespan.
3. Heating and Cooling
Heating and cooling are generally responsible for the biggest portion of businesses utility bills, and can be cut down drastically with a few simple tasks. The easiest way to improve efficiency is to turn down the heat or air conditioning during the night and on weekends. A good way to achieve this is to use a programmable thermostat that regulates the temperature by day and time.
Businesses should also stay on top of filters, coils, compressor fans, and drains. Regular checks of these devices can lead to more efficient equipment and more cost savings on utilities. Also, keep doors and windows closed during the winter months, and allow for air flow when possible during the summer. It is important to maintain your windows. Check to see if there is sufficient caulking around them, and add insulated films to keep heat in during winter, while blocking heat during summer.
4. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
There are many ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and sometimes it is difficult to draw the line of where to stop. With this being said, there are many simple tasks that can greatly reduce the consumption of unnecessary materials. Below is a list of tasks that you can incorporate into your day-to-day life:
- Double-side your printing whenever possible;
- Recycle paper, cardboard, and bottles. Depending where you are located, you can potentially take advantage of government subsidies;
- Instead of buying new printer cartridges, refill your old ones. This is more cost efficient, and keeps the old cartridges out of the landfill.
- Use Online Document Management systems to store files and receipts. This reduces the need for paper copies around the office, while offering a secure backup.
These are simple ways to lower the cost of your utilities, while making a positive impact on the environment. Earth Hour is taking place on March 23 from 8:30 to 9:30pm in each time zone. Take a look at the Earth Hour website for more information.
