Accounting is often considered a stable, secure profession with lots of growth opportunities, even in times of crisis. Some might think that it’s not the most glamorous profession or that it’s not a social one. But indeed, accountants do spend a lot of time with people, because ultimately its about the relationship. Building a good relationship with clients is very important in order to be a good – and successful – accountant.
But what do accountants do exactly? They organize and maintain financial records in order to provide information that helps managers, investors, tax authorities and other decision makers make resource allocation decisions. As someone with an accounting designation, you can work in public practice at a medium or large sized firm, or start up your own practice. Accountants in industry often work as Controllers or CFOs.
In Canada, there are three recognized accounting bodies: the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CA) and the provincial and territorial CA Institutes, the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA), and the Society of Management Accountants of Canada.
The CA program focuses on public accounting and candidates must obtain auditing experience from public accounting firms; the CGA program takes a general approach allowing candidates to focus in their own financial career choices; the CMA program focuses in management accounting. The CA and CMA programs require a candidate to obtain an undergraduate degree as a program entry requirement. The CGA program requires a degree as an exit requirement prior to certification.
